Seed TestS

We believe that all seed lots should be quality tested and evaluated to determine if the results fall within the expected range for a given species. Seed quality tests are crucial for determining the value for money and calculating accurate sowing rates (i.e. g/ha) to reflect intended goals (i.e. plants/ha). Germination tests are also important for determining if seeds are capable of germinating readily when sown. If seeds fail germinate readily, we can determine the likely cause and investigate options for improving germination success.

PURITY TEST AND SEED COUNT (COMBINED)

A purity test and seed count is used to determine the proportion of impurities (weight of pure seed versus impurities) and number of seeds per kilogram (including impurities), using a high precision balance (1/1000th gram). If requested we can also provide the weight (g) of 1000 seeds.

VIABILITY TEST

A viability test (cut test) is conducted by dissecting seeds under a stereo microscope and used to assess seed fill and the health of the embryo/endosperm. In conjunction with the seed count and purity test, the viability test is used to determine the number of viable seeds per kilogram. By calculating the number of viable seeds per kilogram you can accurately determine the volume of seed material required to reach your rehabilitation goals.

The number of viable seeds per kilogram might be considered as one of the most informative calculations when determining the quality of a seed collection. If requested, we can also provide the weight (g) of 1000 viable seeds.

BASIC GERMINATION TEST

A basic germination test (no treatment) is conducted by placing seeds or intact dispersal units in a germination cabinet for 4-6 weeks, simulating the diurnal temperature and light settings of the bio-geographical region where the seeds will be used. At the end of the germination test any non-germinated seed or dispersal units are dissected to determine if they were capable of germination (contained healthy embryos & endosperm).

GERMINATION PRE-TREATMENTS

It is well known that many species have evolved mechanisms to prevent seed germination occurring during unfavourable conditions.  We can recommend and investigate pre-treatments to overcome dormancy issues. If you currently pre-treat your seeds, tests can also be conducted to determine their effectiveness.

IMBIBITION TEST

Imbibition tests are used to determine if seeds have physical dormancy (seed cost prevents uptake of moisture). This test can also be used to determine if specific pre-treatments have been effective in overcoming physical dormancy.
